May 1 (reporter Shuai Rong Tian Dongdong) EU 1 issued a statement that the U. S. short-term extension of the EU steel and aluminum tariff exemption period of the decision extended the uncertainty of the market, and has affected business decisions, the two sides will continue negotiations, but the EU will not negotiate under the threat.

The White House issued a presidential announcement in April 30th that the United States will continue to exempted from the EU, Canada and Mexico's steel and aluminum tariffs until June 1st, for the last 30 days for the related negotiations.

The EU said in a statement that the EU should be completely and permanently exempt from tariffs on steel and aluminum, and that the United States would not be able to levy tariffs on steel and aluminum on the grounds of national security.

The EU also said that the negotiations between EU Trade Commissioner Mar James Thrun and US Commerce Secretary Ross and US trade representative lettlet will continue. The EU is willing to discuss market access issues that are of interest to both sides, but it also explicitly states that it will not negotiate under threat. "Any future work plan across the Atlantic must be equal and mutually beneficial." The statement said.

US President Trump announced in March 8th that as imports of steel and aluminum jeopardize the "national security" of the United States, the United States will impose a tariff of 25% and 10% on imported steel and aluminum products, and the tariff measures are formally entered into force in March 23rd.

The White House announced in March 22nd that it temporarily exempted steel and aluminum tariffs on EU, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, South Korea and other economies until May 1st, in order to negotiate with these economies to deal with the global overcapacity of steel and aluminum.

According to the presidential announcement issued by the White House in April 30th, the US government has reached a principle of agreement with Argentina, Australia and Brazil on steel and aluminum tariffs, and the United States will continue to exempt the steel and aluminum tariffs of these economies in order to finalize the final agreement. South Korea will continue to be exempt from tariffs on steel exports to the United States as South Korea has agreed to reduce overcapacity in excess of steel production and use its quota to restrict exports to the United States, but exports of aluminum to the United States will be imposed from May 1st.

The Trump administration's decision to impose high tariffs on steel and aluminum products is strongly opposed by the international community. Some trade partners in the United States have expressed concern, warning that the US measures could not only affect the multiparty trade interests, but also threaten the stability of the rule based multilateral trading system.
